  1. SWIM IN THE WIDEST WATERFALL IN EUROPE

Nestled in the picturesque town of Kuldīga, the Ventas Rumba is a hidden gem that captivates visitors with its natural beauty. This enchanting waterfall is known as the "widest waterfall in Europe," and stretches an impressive 249 meters wide.

The mighty Venta River gracefully cascades over a series of steps, creating a peaceful sight and the perfect place for a dip on a summer day.

If you visit in spring you can witness the natural phenomenon when fish head upstream to the spawning area of the river and jump out of the water. Because of this, since ancient times, Kuldīga has been known as “the town where fish can be caught in the air!”

2. VISIT THE UNESCO town of KULDĪGA

Known as one of the most beautiful towns in Latvia, Kuldīga is a small 13th-century town filled with cobbled streets, colorful buildings, and a captivating canal.

Recently being classed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023, the well-preserved old town of Kulīdga earned its place in honor of its “outstanding universal value to humanity.”

A popular destination with the Latvian locals for a romantic getaway, Kuldīga is known as the "Venice of Latvia," because of the picturesque canals and small bridges. The waterway runs through the town down to the bottom of the Venta River, next to the 19th-century Kuldīga brick bridge.

3. VISIT Ēdole Castle

Nestled amidst the forest, Ēdole Castle stands as a pink beacon of historical grandeur.

This gothic revival castle is situated on the banks of the Ēdole Lake with a history stretching back to the 12th century. The castle was first built between 1264 and 1267 and then rebuilt in the 16th century.

Take a tour of the castle, and learn the history of the building and past residence. Climb to the top of the tower to see views of the surrounding area and courtyard below. Then dine in their luxury restaurant in the middle of the castle and walk around the peaceful outside grounds.

4. WILD HORSES IN PAPE

Pape Nature Reserve stands as a remarkable testament to the country's commitment to preserving its natural treasures. Renowned for its remarkable population of wild horses and aurochs, they roam freely across the vast landscapes of the reserve. The reserve offers a unique opportunity to witness the harmony between these wild horses and their natural habitat, providing a unique experience for nature enthusiasts and animal lovers alike.

The Pape Nature Reserve sits just 15 km south of Liepaja. Surrounding Lake Pape, the 5700 hectare reserve includes the shore of the Baltic Sea along with a combination of dunes, marshes, forests, and wildflower meadows, making it an oasis of biodiversity.

The area is an internationally significant breeding, migrating, and wintering site for over 200 species of birds. Around spring and autumn time you can witness thousands of birds who include the reserve in their migration route. Head to the bird-watching tower to peacefully watch the birds.

During our visit to Pape Nature Reserve, we got to witness the herd of wild horses and aurochs run in between the trees through a low, thick fog. It was such a dramatic and majestic experience!

5. CITY BREAK IN LIEPĀJA

Leipāja is a charming and vibrant city that captivates visitors with its unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Being the largest city in the Kurzeme Region, Liepāja sits on the Baltic Sea and is home to one of the best white sandy beaches in the Baltics.

  • Admire the abundance of colorful street art that adorns the pretty streets

  • Visit the 3km Liepaja Seaside Park, rent an electric scooter, and enjoy the calming nature

6. DISCOVER Irbene radio telescope

Within the Latvian forest, you’ll find a once, top-secret radioastronomy research center that was previously operated by the residents in a secret Soviet settlement which now lies derelict. Once a tool of Soviet spies, the site was a secret until 1993 after Latvia regained independence and discovered the installation.

The RT-32, also known as the Irbene Radar is a 32-meter wide telescope and one of the largest telescopes in Northern Europe. The Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Center offers tours around the now-abandoned site and underground passageways where you can learn about the fascinating history. As you step inside, you’re transported back in time, surrounded by old equipment and relics of the past.

7. Visit PĀVILOSTA

A popular destination for Latvians and lovers of windsurfing, Pāvilosta is a small but charming port town on the Baltic Sea.
